In this course we shall be mainly concerned with improving your speaking skill, but in order to speak you must also learn to listen.
The first thing we have to do is to define what in meant by phonetics. However before we can do this we need to look at what we mean by language.

What is language? language is a mean of communication.
human language is a complex system of exchanging information, for passing message, through words.
The four language skills are reading, writing, listening, and speaking
When we write a word it is made up of letters. For instance, the word cat is made up of three letters, C A T. when we speak the word is made up of sounds. For example the word cat is made up of three sounds.
But the number of letter in the word is not always the same as the number of sounds. If we take the word this, it is made up of four letters; but only three sounds.

You know that in English there are only 26 letters; but do you know how many sounds there are? There are 44 sounds in English.

To make a distinction between the sound and the letter f the sound is always written between slanted lines // like /p/, /b/, /f/. These are called phonemes.

There are three branches of phonetics:

Articulatory phonetics: describes how we make sounds by use of the organs of speech.

Auditory phonetics: describes how we recognize sounds as different and are thus able to understand spoken messages.

Acoustic phonetics: is concerned with the study of the scientific properties of sound; it is a branch of physics.

Sorry to say that is the end for now because I have to go,
    Waiting for your comments,
    See you later.
